Pour son premier concert The Other Side partage l'affiche du Civic Hotel avec les Visitors de Deniz Tek en février 1979. D'autres shows sont joués dont une triple affiche avec The Visitors et The Lipstick Killers à Manly Flicks. En mai 1979 The Other Side et The Lipstick Killers tournent dans la région d'Adelaide. Un concert en première partie de Rose Tattoo au Bondi Lifesaver vire au cauchemar : The Other Side n'a pas la possibilité de faire une balance sonore avant le show et les roadies des Tattoes sabotent le son. Quand Rob Younger leur demande des comptes il est entraîné à l'extérieur et brutalisé à tel point que la tournée prévue à Melbourne doit s'arrêter ! Un autre coup dur survient en août quand Mark Kingsmill annonce qu'il rejoint The Hitmen. Après deux mois d'inactivité forcée Rob persuade Ron Keeley (batterie, ex-Radio Birdman, The Visitors) de prendre la place vacante. Malheureusement, le mois suivant, Ron Keeley décide de déménager au Royaume Uni. Cet ultime coup du sort provoque la disparition d'un groupe prometteur unanimement regretté.

- "The Other Side n'ont donné que 17 concerts en un peu plus d'un an mais ils ont joué le plus excitant et intense Rock'n'Roll dont cette ville a été témoin et ils ont été une puissante source d'inspiration et une influence majeur pour les groupes à venir. Ils formaient une force tout aussi puissante de la scène de Sydney à cette époque que Radio Birdman, The Lipstick Killers, The Visitors, The Hitmen, mais pour ma part je pense qu'ils étaient meilleurs qu'eux tous".

- "Nous sommes restés ensemble un an et nous avons fait 17 concerts. C'est le nombre réel. The Other Side avait le punch, beaucoup d'énergie, aucune complaisance, mais manquait de chansons originales. Le répertoire était constitué essentiellement de reprises obscures que nous aimions. Nous pensions que peu de gens les connaitraient et ne sauraient pas si nous les avions écrites ou pas".

En juin 1983 Rob Younger est contacté par Charles Fisher qui lui annonce que les promoteurs de The Breaking Point, la tournée australienne Zombie Birdhouse d'Iggy Pop, seraient intéressés par un groupe spécialement assemblé pour assurer la première partie. Pour répondre au cahier des charges Rob Younger choisit Chris Masuak (guitare, chant, ex-Radio Birdman, The Hitmen), Kent Steedman (guitare, Celibate Rifles), Tony Robertson (basse, chant, The Hitmen), Mark Kingsmill (batterie, The Hitmen).

- "1984, la belle saison, probablement plus le printemps que l'été un samedi matin.
J'habite encore chez mes parents, dans un pavillon de banlieue plutôt agréable mais avec une petite boîte aux lettres.
En conséquence de quoi, le facteur (il y avait du courrier le samedi à cette époque) se voit contraint de sonner à la grille.
Je sors et il me remet un petit colis carré d'environ 20 par 20 de couleur marron avec des timbres AUSTRALIENS.
Le graal vient d'arriver.
Petit retour en arrière : J'ai découvert le rock australien grâce à Mr Gérald Guignot, alors vendeur chez New Rose la boutique de disques parisienne de référence. Les Saints je connaissais déjà mais pas Radio Birdman. Et d'ailleurs je commence plutôt par New Race et je déroule la pelote. Avis aux plus jeunes lecteurs d'entre nous, internet n'existait pas, en tous cas pas pour nous et il faut donc se débrouiller avec la presse (anglaise) ou les copains.
Et c'est par l'un ou l'autre, je ne m'en souviens plus, que j'apprends que Rob Younger, sorte de Rahan diaphane remonté des Enfers, a monté un autre groupe au nom très provocateur, The New Christs, et qu'un 45 Tours est disponible en Australie sur le label Citadel (je ne savais pas que Sonic Records de Le Havre le sortirait quelques mois plus tard et c'est tant mieux, sinon je ne serais pas en train de vous barber avec mes histoires).
Et donc le graal ça se mérite à cette époque. On ne va pas sur Discogs.com carte de crédit en main et l'affaire est faite.
Non ça commence par trouver l'adresse de Citadel Records le PO Box au dos d'un des 1ers 45 Tours du label envoyer un courrier avec des IRC... ha ha ha kezaco ? : International Reply Coupon qu'on achète à la poste et ont une valeur nominale dans chaque pays, échange contre des timbres. Quelques semaines plus tard on reçoit un catalogue avec les références du label, un prix en $ australiens et le montant du P&P ((Packing and Postage). A ce stade j'ai un vague trouble de mémoire. Est-ce que je suis allé à la banque acheter des $ australiens que j'ai mis dans une enveloppe emballés dans un papier carbone (pour que l'opacité du papier empêche les âmes mal intentionnées de voler mon argent et de changer le cours de ma vie pour le pire) ou à la poste pour un mandat international, je ne sais plus. Mais toujours est-il que ça a fonctionné car ce beau samedi matin, après avoir ouvert l'emballage avec précaution, ma vie a pris un autre tournant.
Une pochette avec la même photo au recto qu'au verso, à la marge d'un Rob Younger flouté.
Et deux titres courts, envoûtants, the épitome of rock'n'roll, a game changer.
J'ai passé ma journée à écouter ces deux faces, à essayer de déchiffrer les paroles, et à me dire que ce serait magique de voir ce groupe.
40 ans plus tard, je me rappelle de ce matin comme si c'était hier alors que ceux qui me connaissent vous diront que j'ai plutôt une mémoire de poisson rouge.
Et Rob est devenu un ami très proche, j'ai vu et même joué en première partie des New Christs un bon nombre de fois, j'ai depuis acheté tous leurs disques (mais pas toujours chez Discogs), bref l'étincelle de ce jour originel continue à faire bruler le feu. Et c'est toujours aussi bon.

PS : Pour celles et ceux qui découvrent, achetez donc le double album The Burning Of Rome (Wild Honey, Italie) qui vient de sortir. Cette compilation retrace leur longue carrière et les morceaux choisis et suggérés par des fans sont validés par le groupe.
