7’’ – part 21– JONATHAN RICHMAN / MODERN LOVERS – Keith / They Showed Me The Way To Bohemia - (et la France)

 

J’aurai bien sûr pu choisir le seul single des Modern Lovers mk 1, « Roadrunner » (1977), l’édition US avec deux versions du morceau, ou l’édition allemande avec une belle mais anachronique cover, ou la japonaise, avec « Pablo Picasso » en B side. Il y a aussi un EP bootleg avec quatre titres dont « She Cracked » et « Modern World », session Gold Star 1973 produite par Kim Fowley. Voilà pour les singles des Modern Lovers. Il y a aussi un album, un des plus beaux albums jamais enregistrés, souvent réédité, production John Cale et Kim Fowley, et deux live sortis bien plus tard. Beaucoup de bootlegs aussi. 

Je passe sur la période Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, huit albums entre 1976 et 1987, et pas mal de singles, avec covers différentes selon les pays, dont un promo only français, one sided, « When I Dance », 1986, extrait de It’s Time For. 

J’ai donc choisi de mettre en valeur un single de Jonathan Richman, que j’appellerais Jojo, comme le blog dont Jacques et moi faisions partie des administrateurs.

Jojo a commencé sa carrière solo en 1988. Il y a une vingtaine d’albums, dont depuis début 2000 en format réduit avec uniquement le fidèle Tommy Larkins à la batterie, c’est le duo des tournées. Sur le tout dernier album, Only Frozen Sky Anyway, sorti en juillet dernier, on retrouve également un des Modern Lovers originaux, Jerry Harrison, qui avait ensuite rejoint Talking Heads.

Le duo a sorti quelques singles aussi, format qui nous intéresse ici, dont un sorti initialement en 2016 sur Blue Arrow Records, qui vient d’être réédité : « Keith », un hommage à Keith Richards, et « They Show Me The Door To Bohemia », un long morceau, un de mes préférés de Jojo, toutes périodes confondues.

Dans ce morceau autobiographique, Jojo remercie à la fois NY, le Velvet Underground – la légende dit que Jojo aurait assisté à davantage de concerts du VU que Lou Reed - et ses parents de l’avoir laissé vivre une vie de bohémien. 

La chanson monte en intensité jusqu’à la dernière minutes (sur six) avec l’arrivée du saxo (ou de la trompette ?). Magnifique ! 

Jojo brève bio & disco 

Boston (hi Jacques), son Museum of Modern Arts, ses universités…

Jojo fonde les Modern Lovers en 1970, il a 19 ans, avec Jerry Harrison aux claviers, David Robinson (futur Cars) à la batterie et, un temps, John Felice (Hippie Johnny) à la seconde guitare. Jojo dit qu’il n’écrit pas vraiment, qu’il invente juste des chansons. Pour le reste, vous avez Wiki ou autres. Le Jojo blog aussi, surtout.

Tous les albums de Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers sont sortis en France, mis à part le premier (Modern Lovers) et le dernier Modern Lovers 88 (1987). S’agissant des singles, seul « Egyptian Reggae » (1977) est paru chez nous, en dehors du single promo only évoqué en début d’article. Beaucoup de 7’’ sont sortis en Angleterre, Allemagne, Pays-Bas, Espagne et Australie, avec cover et / ou couplage de morceaux exclusifs. 

Pour le volet Jojo solo, on a pu se procurer en édition française le premier album eponymous (1988). Quelques autres (les 2/3) sont en pressage Européen : Jonathan Goes Country (1990), l’album avec les Morells en backing band – il existe aussi des bootlegs démo Jonathan Goes Funky et Jonathan Goes Rhythm & Blues, I Jonathan (1992), Surrender To Jonathan (1996), I’m So Confused (1998), Her Mystery Not Of High Heels And Eye Shadow et son merveilleux titre éponyme (2001), Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love (2003).Enfin un nouvel album français ¿A « Qué Venimos Sino A Caer?, sorti en 2008 sur le label de fringues APC, avec une cover différence de l’édition espagnole (CD only aussi) sorti l’année suivante. Les derniers albums sont sortis aux USA et parfois aussi en Espagne.
Aucun des singles de Jojo solo n’est sorti en France. 

Jojo en France 

Jojo et ses Modern Lovers sont passés à la télé française en 1979 mais n’ont joué la première fois en France qu’en 1982, au New Morning, concert magique, il existe un radio show, il se met à pleurer en interprétant « I’m A Little Dinosaur »… qui a perdu sa maman… et à Lyon. Il revient en 1984, Paris et Lyon, toujours, et en 1985, au Rex Club, puis solo, au New Morning en 1988 – j’ai toujours la cassette - et en 1994, puis pour un festival en 1996, au Trianon et à Le Havre en 1999, aux Café de la Danse (concert sublime) et à Nantes en 2000, au Café de la Danse encore en 2003.

J’avais eu la chance de le rencontrer, lui et Tommy Larkin, à Évreux en 2003. Entre autres choses, je lui dis qu’après le succès (récent) de « Marie À Tout Prix », je pensais qu’il allait enfin avoir un plus grand succès, mais que comme quand CBS a cherché un nouveau Dylan, ça a été Springsteen, ça aurait pu être Elliott Murphy. Il me répond « je me contente du succès que j’ai. S’agissant de ta comparaison Springsteen / Murphy, je ne suis pas d’accord, pour Bruce, c’était ça ou crever, tandis qu’Elliott a pu reprendre son boulot de comptable » (pas certain qu’Elliott ait été comptable, je pense que Jojo parlait de n’importe quel job alimentaire).

Jojo est aussi venu chez nous en 2006, au Trabendo, au Nouveau Casino en 2008, au Café de la Danse, cinq dates en 2009, à la Boule Noire et pas mal d’autres dates, en 2010 aussi, dont près de mon nouveau bled, à Angoulème en 2010, et pour la dernière fois, à la minuscule Flèche d’Or en 2012, ainsi qu’à Reims et près de Lyon. Depuis, les tournées sont limitées aux USA et Canada.
