INTERVIEW MONSTRE JOHNNY CASINO
JOHNNY CASINO is a busy man, so busy that he forgot to answer some of our questions. That's okay, as long as he continues to entertain us solo or with his band ADTEROID B612.
Go Johnny Go!
Taste question: Which artists have influenced you the most, and what can you tell us examples about this influence? Who is the artist you dislike and why will he/she never influence you?
I would say that a combination of Bob Dylan, The Saints, Dr John, Gene Clarke and The Rolling Stones, and all of the above for both musical and lyrical inspiration, they all taught me very early on to be honest and write from the heart or how I feel which can change at any given moment so I like my music to be able to have many sides shapes and colors.
There are plenty of bands or artists I have no time for or dislike but to me it would be a waste of time to explain why or spew negative vibes, so let's just say there is a lot of complete manufactured rubbish out there that gets spun to the public as music and it is nothing more than a fashion show.
Intellectual question: Which non-musical artist (filmmaker, writer, painter...) played an important role in the way the band evolved…
Lots of films and filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch, classic films such as The Sting, One Flew over the cuckoos nest, Pale Rider, Kelly´s Heroes, Writers such as Patti Smith, William Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Lester Bangs, and I really like urban buildings or old towns of villages, the look of structures that have stood the test of time and have a certain character about them, old bars, diners etc etc, local corner stores etc etc
History question: Can you sum up the life of your career?
It somehow is still living!! And evolving and learning and writing and with a pinch of luck it will be something I can do until my time is up!! It is something I enjoy and being creative is something I am always thinking about, new ways, reinventing old ways, natural sounds organic feel and progression
Selfish question: Why did you prefer a solo career than being in a band?
It is just way more satisfying to me, I am relying on me to make things happen, not waiting around for others to find time or motivation, doing things my way is the best way for me, there are times I enjoy working with a producer but we must connect on many different levels not just music, so it is often hard to find that, and I really enjoy the process.
Buddy question: Who has helped you most in your adventure and without whom you wouldn't have had the same evolution?
There has been a bunch of friends and musical friends BUT it has been the friends/brothers I have been lucky to have that own recording studios, my dear brother Pepe Gomar from Estudio Tigruss in Spain and Mike Burnham from Tardis Studios in London and Australia, I learnt so much from them and they gave me so much time to get better at the process and really took time to understand my musical expression and songs
Spinal Tap question: What's the most stupid thing that's ever happened to you?
There are far too many to recall, and with all things being equal I would say there are still many spinal tap moments to come in the future
Question Happy Few: What's the biggest benefit you've derived from your career, and can you tell us about it?
Just the fact that people still want to buy my records and really look forward to each new record I make, people still coming to concerts that have seen me play for close to 35 years now and still show so much interest in my music, I really feel blessed in this way, I have never made any kind of big money out of my music but these moments shared with people are worth so much more than money
Art question: What book, film, record and current band do you really like?
I really enjoy everyday life Irish and English films, The Guard, Calvary, In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin, I have been reading a cople of music type books lately and I find some of them great and other really strange, for example I am a big fan of Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders but reading her book Reckless really turned me off her expression, but I still love the band, the same goes for the band called Big Star but after reading the Chris Bell book I really had a distaste for that band and it really effected the way I listen to them, but reading books by Jeff Tweedy from the band Wilco was great!! and I really love how that band keeps on keepin on and changing its colors and sounds, great band!!
Funny question. What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you?
Falling off Stages? Turning up to a concert a day late?? There are many funny moments that happen while on the road, but most of them are funny while you are on the road and may not be so funny in everyday regular life??
Camembert question: What's France to you, apart from the land of wine and cheese?
France is a land of so much beauty and so many friends!! Great bars and people that show wonderful love for my music, France is also the homeland to my drummer Dimi Dero and bassist Vinz Guilluy so France holds a special place in my heart.
